Welcome to the Year 2018!
The year 2018 is already one week old, and tomorrow most of us are back to school. Before we start our everyday teaching, hopefully with fresh energy, I would like to share a few thoughts with you.
The turn of the year is always a very special time for me. I love the quiet days between Christmas and New Year. At this time I can mentally finalize the old year, take stock of the past year, and prepare myself mentally for the new year. How do you deal with the turn of the year? Do you have New Year’s resolutions? Are there certain things that you would like to change in 2018? In your class? In communication? Or maybe in your private life?
Questions
The days around the turn of the year are a good time to reflect on your own path, on your own actions and, if necessary, to correct the direction! I like to write these things down. The following questions support my reflections:
What was particularly good in the past year? Were there special experiences, special events? What did I do really well in my professional tasks, in my working, in my teaching? What targets did I reach? What can I be proud of? What am I grateful for?
Take the time to write a list of things that were good in your personal past year. You will be astonished about the amount of positive things you experienced the past year! Enjoy it and be grateful for it!
In the next step, I have to ask myself: What was not working so well, what was not so fine in the past year? Where didn’t I achieve the result that I wanted to achieve? What was the reason for that? Could I have managed things better, or was the reason of „failing“ maybe not in my sphere of influence?
When I ask these questions, I usually can realize where my share of „not reaching“ a target was. Here I have to be really honest with myself, otherwise it doesn’t make sense. Of course, this awareness is currently uncomfortable, but also beneficial. For it is particularly out of our „ineligibilities“ that we learn and develop further. In the course of these considerations, I inevitably come to the question of whether the targets I have set myself continue to make sense, or whether a „course correction“ is necessary.
Periods of reflection
Starting such a period of reflection from time to time – perhaps not just at the turn of the year – helps a lot to stay on a „healthy“ path. It helps to stay „conscious“ in everyday life and at work. In the long run, it prevents you from finding yourself somewhere you did not want to go. It also prevents you from getting into a routine where you just „work like a machine“. So, especially when you work a lot because you really enjoy what you are doing, stop from time to time in between and reflect on your targets and your personal path! And be grateful for everything you’ve reached so far!
With this in mind, I wish you all a happy year 2018 with lots of music and many delightful moments!
Sincerely,
Andrea Holzer-Rhomberg
